This contribution is a defense of literary studies in the study programmes of (not only) future English teachers. It is more than common that students and unfortunately even colleagues undermine the importance of literature in the curriculum of future English teachers. Their argument is based on the evidence that an English teacher barely uses primary literary sources in the classroom. The position of literary studies in teaching programmes is undermined. This surprisingly goes hand in hand with the deterioration of reading skills and the students' literacy . Therefore it is essential and much more important to devote enough time to that field of study. However, the approach to teaching literature needs to be reformed, its main goals should be reformulated and a new curriculum in literature teaching should be introduced.
