New Hopes, New Threats: Urban Renewal in the Czech Republic, 1989-2014
Original language description
The chapter presents an overview of changes in the appearance of towns and cities in the Czech Republic since the fall of communism, with important examples of more or less successful interventions into traditional urban tissue. Since the heritage conservation had been quite neglected during the previous period, the change of the regime awakened new hopes, which were in many aspects fulfilled in the 1990s. Municipalities devoted lots of attention to the appearance of the city centres. Some historical cores were completely renovated. However, after 2000, influential politicians withdrew their support for heritage conservation. Private investors have introduced novelties unknown during the communist era into conservation areas (colourful advertisements, underground parking lots). Large shopping centres and high-rise towers are built in vacant lots thus creating a stark contrast with the old town's skyline. Heritage conservation was further weakened by architects and critics, who forcefully promoted modernist interventions into traditional structures. Nevertheless, all attempts to build an avant-garde iconic cultural building have failed.
