Accessibility of the digital platform at universities for students with visual impairment and blindness

  • Original language description

The aim of this paper is to define selected key determinants of accessibility of the digital platform in the tertiary education of students with several visual impairments. In the context of tertiary education, it describes important aspects of the use of semantic HTML tags and elements which are used to describe the electronic document in an accessible and structured form. From the point of view of blind student we observed theoretical as well as practical scope of the use of selected semantical HTML tags for headings and lists. The paper also separately elaborates on the issues related to the implementation of WAI-ARIA 1.0 land-marks into the HTML 5 specification. Through the means of combined qualitative and quan-titative research we conclude that the accessibility level of digital platforms of universities is unsatisfactory. In 2015, 63 % of universities did not use correct headings and lists in their digital platforms and we did not find a single institution which was fully compliant with WAI-ARIA landmarks.
