Original language description
The interdisciplinar study deals with the significance and problems in using of shortenings (shortcuts) in different fields of science and technology, especially in written communication. It characterizes the most used forms of shortenings and ways of their creation. It points out on scattered standardization and homonymous nature of a range of shortenings and also on necessity of creating lists of shortenings used in documents of widest range as well as necessity of unification of shortcuts in documents created by numerous teams of authors. It does not avoid problems of accepting shortenings from foreign languages and their pronunciation in the language of a particular document. On examples, especially from the field of ICT, it points out on the most frequent mistakes in using of shortenings. The study deals with shortening in the context of the Slovak language, but a number of its findings and conclusions are valid also for shortenings in other languages.
