Preparation of Children to Leave Institutional Care as a Means of Successful Social Integration
Original language description
The family should play fundamental roles that, in addition to other functions, support healthy development of the child’s personality. If the family fails to fulfil these roles, the needs of the child must be ensured in a different way. In the Czech Republic, the children’s home is one of the types of establishments for children from dysfunctional families. This establishment fulfils educational and social roles. Although children’s homes try to be as close to the family environment as possible, they can never be a complete substitute. Children living in an institution for a long time have problems in the mental and social areas and their socialization and successful functioning in society tends to be more difficult in many respects. The paper focuses on the departure of children from children’s homes in order to gain independence. The methodological section presents the partial results of the quantitative part of the research, which involved 98 directors of children's homes in the Czech Republic. This section is a theoretical-empirical basis for the second stage of the research, the conclusions of which are significant for this paper. This section focuses on the subjective perspective of individuals who will soon leave their children’s home in order to become independent. The paper presents analyses of interviews with three clients in children’s home. These interviews were analysed by means of a qualitative method called the Meaning Constitution Analysis (MCA), which is based on Husserl’s empirical phenomenology.
