Individuals’ subjective view of leaving institutional care
Original language description
Leaving parents and becoming independent is a key milestone in the transition to adulthood. For individuals who for various reasons do not grow up in their own family, this important step is much more difficult. Institutional care in the Czech Republic includes establishments where individuals are placed if they do not have their biological family or in the event that their family does not want to, cannot or is unable to take care of them in an appropriate way. This paper presents the partial results of a quantitative research study. One of the areas that the survey focused on was the relationship between respondents’ self-efficacy and their anticipation of leaving institutional care in order to become independent. Data collection was performed by means of a questionnaire survey. The target group comprised of clients of children’s homes aged from 17 to 26 years who were about to leave their establishment. The basic research sample consisted of 263 clients of children’s homes; the selection sample included 208 respondents. The data obtained were statistically validated using the Shapiro-Wilk test of normality and Mann-Whitney test. The correlation between the variables was tested by the Spearman’s correlation coefficient; the variances were compared using the Ansari-Bradley nonparametric test. On the basis of data analysis, the hypothesis cannot be confirmed.
