University Students' Risky Behavior in Online Environment During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Original language description
Digitalization and the transition to an online environment have been affecting more and more areas of human life. This trend has not refrained from the field of education either. More modern technologies are being used and both teachers and students must adapt to new trends in teaching and communication. Spending more time online brings several risks and limitations. The most serious issues include cyberbullying, cyber grooming, sexting, and more. This paper describes the results of a research whose main goal was to find the difference between the number of university students who encountered risky behavior on the Internet before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research also focused on the time students spent online in connection with school and extracurricular activities before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this paper, we present the results of a preliminary research. It was attended by 114 randomly selected students of the Faculty of Education, Palacký University in the Czech Republic. Of this sample, 94 (82.46%) were women and 20 (17.54%) were men aged 19 to 58. It was discovered that university students were significantly more likely to encounter risky behavior before the pandemic than during the pandemic. There has been a significant increase in the time spent on the Internet as part of school activities during the Covid-19 pandemic, mostly in the category of 5 or more hours, whereas the time spent on the Internet while focusing on private activities decreased. Of the selected risky behaviors, sexting was the one that used to be encountered the most in the period before the pandemic. The most exposed group was the age category up to 22 years. The forthcoming larger study will deal with this issue in more detail, it will also analyze other factors influencing the risky behavior of students in the online environment.
