The workshop, led by professor Thomas Austenfeld (University of Fribourg, Switzerland), focused on issues related to teaching Southern (US)American literature today. First, a short and practical history of the American South and the major components of Southern identity were discussed. Then a working canon of Southern literature works to teach at university level was discussed, with relevance to the history of race and identity in the South. At the end, a fruitful discussion of these topics was done.
