Blended Learning in Tertiary Education in the Czech Republic – Visions for the Future
Original language description
The Covid-19 pandemic radically transformed teaching and learning on all levels of the education system across the world. In the Czech Republic, blended learning is habitually used at universities in the so-called combined study mode. However, the pandemic broadened the possibilities to apply the principles of blended learning in regular on-site courses and provided teachers with the necessary experience and impulse to embrace and implement new methods of teaching and organizing the class and the course. The article presents results of a 2021 questionnaire survey conducted among 370 faculty members of Departments of Education at nine public state universities in the Czech Republic. The survey investigated their willingness to apply the principles of blended learning in their future on-site courses using a short questionnaire that included nine Likert-scale questions, a list of educational activities to be taught in face-to-face mode or online, and a space for comments. Using Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA and U test, the responses were analyzed with respect to respondents’ years of teaching experience, university affiliation, and field of expertise, and interpreted in relation to the strategic plan of the author’s alma mater. Content analysis of respondents’ comments revealed deeper insights into the future perspectives of using blended learning on a regular basis.
