The Link between Emotional Intelligence and Personality
Original language description
Emotional intelligence is viewed as a bridge between emotions and intelligence. Emotions can be useful sources of information that can help individuals interpret and navigate through the complexity of social situations and relationships. Now it is widely accepted that emotional intelligence is also a key determent for success and in the development of personality. The profession of teacher is ranked among the most demanding professions because, among other things, it is associated with a huge burden in the field of emotion management. Teachers are expected to be able to communicate with all students, with gifted and less gifted students, with students with a diverse range of emotional tendencies. The aim of the survey was to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and personality factors among teachers. The research group consisted of 997 primary and secondary school teachers, of which 109 were men (average age 44, 9) and 889 women (average age 45, 17). The Czech translation of the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Short form, TEIQue-SF was used to determine the emotional intelligence score. To assess the personality factors the Neo Big Five questionnaire was used. The results point out that there is a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and neuroticism, extraversion, and openness. A significant negative correlation was found between emotional intelligence and agreeableness. Gender differences were examined as well.
