Decision-Making Process of Secondary Vocational School Graduates when Choosing College

  • Original language description

For a secondary vocational school student, the issue of career decision-making is a rather difficult task. Some research shows that the predominant influence in this area is the pupil's family. However, even in these circumstances, the role of the school is not secondary. Its role in the process of a pupil's choice of future educational path may become more important in the case of indecisive pupils, in the case of pupils who are gifted in more than one area, or in the case where the pupil's family background is not fully functional. The school should provide the pupil with information about his/her aptitude for particular areas of education and about his/her options for further education. The article focuses on the decision-making process that graduates of secondary vocational schools go through when choosing their next educational path in the form of studying at university. To analyze this process, a multi-criteria decision-making model is developed based on a questionnaire survey among students of a selected university. The questionnaire survey was conducted among first year full-time students and served to determine their preferences, on the basis of which the construction and actual calculation of the decision-making model of these students was subsequently implemented. A sub-objective of the paper is also to present a description and evaluation of the entire decision-making process and to outline recommendations for high school practice.
