The paper focuses on the role of teachers’ beliefs in building the competences of prospective teachers in the context of the current document “Competence Framework of the Teaching Graduate (CFTG).” The aim of the research was to identify how students of the Faculty of Education perceive their competences necessary for effective teaching. On the basis of a questionnaire survey conducted among 146 students of teaching for primary schools of the Faculty of Education of Palacký University Olomouc in full-time and part-time form of study, data on self-assessment of readiness for the development of competences in the field of mathematics was collected. Within two categories (understanding mathematics and the ability to didactically process mathematical content) the students were asked to rate their abilities on a six-point Likert scale. The results showed that the students rated their abilities positively in both categories. The paper evaluates each aspect of these results in context.
