Creating a shared space for freely chosen play in order to promote physical activity in pre-primary and primary education

  • Original language description

Play is the essence of a child’s life. All social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional aspects are developed through play, especially through a freely chosen, intrinsically motivated and self-controlled play. A key factor shaping the opportunities and conditions for a child's play is a kindergarten and later a primary school. In 2003 there was a change in legislation and many school and school establishments responded to the change by merging their kindergarten with primary school into one legal entity. Therefore, almost two thirds of kindergartens and primary schools in the Czech Republic are in one building and sharing the school environment, and cooperation at various events organized by the school, where the children spend most of their day. Therefore, kindergarten and schools should be responsible for providing more play spaces and opportunities: to become more play-friendly. Developing play friendly school climate represents a great potential of smooth transition from kindergarten to primary school and maintaining sufficient physical activity in children. The paper deals with the first phase of the three-year international project Children’s Access to Play in Schools, in which the Palacky University Olomouc participates represented by the Faculty of Physical Culture.
