Within-crop variability affecting variable N application to winter wheat

In 2002-2004, possibilities of four methods (N-tester, plant inorganic analyses, aerial multispectral imaging and N-sensor,) for variable N application to winter wheat at DC 30-32 were examined in selected fields (at the area of 26-56 ha). The largest differences were found between the N-sensor and PIA. Very similar values were observed in digital aerial imagery and the N-sensor, which is given by a similar way for data collecting. The N-tester allows us to measure chlorophyll content in leaves, however, it does not capture the other factors affecting N-rate assessment. PIA enables to assess nutrient content in plants, but it does not show plant interactions in the stand either. By contrast, the N-sensor and the multispectral camera use canopy reflectance, including interactions and compensation relationships among plants.
