The importance of bacterial and chemical preservatives to improve the silage making process of cocksfoot grass
Original language description
Four varieties of cocksfoot were used in a specific study to determinate the effect of silage additives on fermentation characteristics. Herbage was chopped and ensiled in laboratory silos in 3 replicates per treatment. Treatments of grass silages were:1) without additives (WA) was used as control, 2) with bacterial inoculants (BI) and 3) with chemical preservatives (CP). After 90 days of conservation at temperature 26-28 °C, the silages were subjected to chemical analysis, during which were measured the levels of pH, contents of ammonia, lactic, propionic, acetic, butyric acids, ethanol and acidity of water extract. The significantly (P<0.05) lower content of lactic, acetic acids and ethanol were detected in Starly variety compared to other varieties. Moreover, in silage ensiled with biological inoculants (BI) were found significant differences in the contents of lactic acid (5.09 %) in contrast with control (WA) and chemical silage model (CP).
