Role of interception and stem flow in water balance of short rotation poplar coppice
Original language description
Open area rainfall, throughfall and stem flow were measured during DOY 153 -- 292 (2012) within poplar-based short rotation coppice plantation (SRC), located in Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, Czech Republic. The purpose of this study was to quantify portion of canopy interception, as additional information to overall water balance of short rotation coppice. Our results showed following percentage share of the gross rainfall (283 mm) - interception 12 % (33.6 mm), stemflow 14 % (40.5 mm), throughfall 74 %(208.5 mm) and net rainfall 87 % (249 mm). The full range of canopy interception values was very variable (1.5 -- 36 %) depending mainly on the intensity and duration of each rain event. Finally, one suggestion was given to ensure proper calculation of interception. In case of some studies, stemflow is not taken into account and is not subtracted from gross rainfall; then interception can be substantially overestimated
