Comparison of two in vitro direct contact methods for testing acaricidal effect of essential oils in poultry red mites (Dermanyssus Gallinae)

  • Original language description

The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of selected essential oils against the poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) by two different methods - glass vial bioassay and Petri-dishes. Both methods are in vitro direct contact methods. In both methods the same concentration of essential oils, lavender, cinnamon, clove bud, were used: 0.5; 0.25; 0.12; 0.06; 0.03; 0.015 μL/cm2. The average mortality in the negative control was 2%. There was no significant effect of in vitro methods on poultry red mite mortality in essential oils with high acaricidal effect, cinnamon and clove bud, up to concentration 0.03 μL/cm2. In vitro methods had significant effect on poultry red mite mortality using lavender essential oil, with lover acaricidal effect, at concentrations 0.5; 0.25; 0.12 and 0.06 μL/cm2. It is necessary to pay more attention in vitro methods testing lower concentration of essential oils or essential oils with lower acaricidal effect.
