Comparison of three in vitro methods at testing acaricidal effects of essential oils against poultry red mites (Dermanyssus gallinae)
Original language description
This study tested the effectiveness of selected plant essential oils against the poultry red mites (PRM, Dermanyssus gallinae) by three different in vitro direct contact methods - glass vials, Petri-dishes and veneer discs. In all methods the same concentration of essential oils (clove bud, cinnamon, lavender) were used: 0.5; 0.25; 0.12; 0.06 μL/cm2. The average mortality in the negative control was 8 %. There was no significant effect of in vitro methods on poultry red mites' mortality in essential oils with high acaricidal effect (cinnamon and clove bud) up to concentration 0.25 μL/cm2. In vitro methods had significant effect on poultry red mites' mortality using essential oils with lower acaricidal effect. It is necessary to pay more attention in vitro methods used for testing lower concentrations of essential oils or essential oils with lower acaricidal effect. Standardization of the method would be useful.
