Auxin-cytokinin interaction in control of axillary bud growth
Original language description
The fact that changes in auxin and cytokinin levels in shoots can significantly affect lateral bud outgrowth suggests that apical dominance may be influenced by the interaction between these two groups of hormones. Cytokinins are the substances having the capacity to release lateral buds from inhibition. In contrary, auxin can inhibit axillary bud outgrowth. Decapitation removal of the auxin source results in depletion of auxin in the inhibited lateral bud and its subsequent outgrowth. Pea lateral buds of the 2nd primary scales showing the highest growth potential have been used in experiments. Break of apical dominance was simulated by detaching the buds from 21-day-old mother plants followed by their transfer to medium.
