Global Economic Governance in East Asia - Through the Looking Glass of the European Sovereign Debt Crisis
Original language description
The purpose of this special issue is to understand better the short-term and long-term repercussions of the European Sovereign Debt Crisis for global governance -- understood here as "the processes and institutions, both formal and informal, that guide and restrain the collective activities of a group" (Keohane & Nye, 2000: 12) -- and regional economic integration in Asia. As the IMF recently stressed, China's economic growth will be cut almost in half if Europe's crisis worsens. The crisis raises fundamental questions about the fabric of global governance, e.g. whether there is a Post-Washington Consensus emerging on how to achieve better global and regional economic policy coordination; whether 'liberal democracy' is the best form of state governmentto provide global public goods such as financial stability; the interests and strategies of emerging powers such as China in securing global financial stability; the question of leadership (or the lack thereof).
