Political party Ano: Technocratic politics or a turn towards illiberalism?

  • Original language description

The breakdown of the hegemonic order on the Czech political party scene after the economic crisis created conditions for the rise of new political parties, which were not embedded in the traditional left-right struggles. One of these parties was the political party ANO, established and led by one of the richest entrepreneurs, Andrej Babiš. The main aim of this chapter is to present an overview of the main developments of the ANO party since its inception in 2011 as a civic association, its transformation into a political party and its rise to becoming the strongest political party in Czech politics. It focuses on the issues of party organization, ideology and electoral campaigns as well as providing an overview of its electoral gains. In the second part, this chapter discusses the main scandals surrounding the persona of its leader Andrej Babiš, more precisely a subsidy corruption scandal connected to the Stork's Nest recreation complex and then the scandal regarding his registration as a communist State Security (StB) agent. Even if the ANO party presents itself as anti-corruption and able to govern the state as a firm (technocratic governance), it has been increasingly attempting to employ a variety of illiberal measures and thus weaken the quality of democracy in the Czech Republic.
