Vertical and horizontal water redistribution within Norway spruce (Picea abies) roots in the Moravian Upland
Original language description
Hydraulic redistribution (HR) within roots of large Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees was studied by the heat field deformation method for sap flow measurements. Localized irrigation (LI) was applied to steepen gradients of water potential inthe soil to enhance rates of HR. Root systems of seven sample trees were then exposed to 30 cm depth using a supersonic air-stream (air-spade). Vertical redistribution of water was observed within the conducting xylem of large coarse roots and some adjacent small lateral roots before LI was applied. Immediately after LI, horizontal redistribution through the pathway "wet roots-stem base-dry roots" was demonstrated for water within lateral roots from the same side of the trees. The amount of redistributed water within dry roots was dependent on the position of these roots relative to the watered roots and their watered root absorbing area. The redistribution of water by way of the "rehydrated roots - soil - dry roots of neighbouring tre
