Mechanical damage to root systems by forwarders and its application for objective derivation of safe width of extraction trails
Original language description
We studied impact of passages of harwesters and forwarders on Norway spruce root systems of spruce along extraction trails. The sites were characterized by medium-textured soil of the pseudogley type under favourable moisture conditions. Damage to conducting systems of trees we described earlier, here we focused on absorbing root surfaces in fine roots and on belowground damage to upper coarse root surfaces (especially covering tissues). It was found, that damage to fine roots is not crucial, because itremains local and such roots can regenerate. Damage to coarse roots is more serious, the wounds (smashed bark, phloem and young xylem) do not heal and tissue is opened for fungal infection, which can jeopardize the whole tree. Based on determined depthup to which the damages occur and detail description of root positioning we derived the minimum distance from stems, which the forwarders can approach and where roots are deep enough to be protected by the upper soil layer. This way we ha
