Comparison of different forest regeneration methods after windthrow
Original language description
We evaluated the prosperity of various forest regeneration variants after two years on an area clear-cut due to wind disaster affecting in 2010 allochthonous coniferous stands growing in mid-elevations of the Czech Republic. The forest regeneration variants established were as follows: planting of target species (spruce, beech), preparatory seeding -- non-target species (birch), and spontaneous succession. Pursuant to the current Czech forest legislation, successfully regenerated stand can be consideredafter two years a variant with the plantation in which the density of target species ranges between 6 and 9 thousand plants per hectare and the plants are distributed across the plot in a regular pattern. At these altitudes, the best doing species is spruce while the growth of beech is strongly suppressed due to inadequate climatic conditions of the wind-thrown area. The variants of seeding and natural succession can be currently considered unsuitable from the perspective of legislation
