EVALUATION OF FROST HARDINESS IN SOME CULTIVARS OF DIOSPYROS SPP. BY ARTIFICIAL FREEZING

  • Original language description

Persimmon is a subtropical fruit tree which is tolerant to temperatures several degrees below zero. The Czech Republic does not belong to a persimmon growing area - due to low winter temperatures which go below --15°C. However, there are interspecific hybrids between Diospyros kaki L. and Diospyros virginiana L., which have higher frost tolerance. Their origin is in the Ukraine, GNBS Yalta and their names are cv. Rossiyanka and cv. Nikitskaiya Bordovaiya. The aim of our work was to compare the frost tolerance among the cultivars of Diospyros kaki L. ( cv. Zenjimaru, Vaniglia, Tipo and Fuyu ), interspecific hybrids ( cv. Rossiyanka, Nikitskaiya Bordovaiya) and Diospyros lotus L. Plant material - 1year old shoots were used in artificial freezing tests. The experiments were performed during the years 1999 - 2004. The temperatures for determination of LT50 were used from --4°C to --24°C. The cultivars of Diospyros kaki L. had LT50 from --13°C to --16°C. The interspecific hybrids had values
