Growing and possibilities of introduction of some species of genus Diospyros in the Czech Republic
Original language description
The genus Diospyros includes species that are growing mainly from tropical to subtropical areas. However there are known species with higher frost resistance in comparison with persimmon, that have mainly rootstocks use. These are Diospyros lotus L. (date plum) and Diospyros virginiana L. (American persimmon). The cultivars 'Rossiyanka' and 'Nikitskaiya Bordovaiya' were obtained from interspecific hybridization in GNBS Yalta and have a value of frost resistance of about -22°C. Interspecific hybrids andsome varieties of American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.) could be grown in the warmest areas of the Czech Republic such as minor fruit species thanks to their frost resistance and nutritional quality. At the Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice thereis an established collection with cultivars of persimmon, American persimmon and interspecific hybrids. The plants from the collection are grown in three ways. Outside there is an established plantation of Diospyros lotus L. (date plum)
