The Apricot Breeding Programme at the Horticulture Faculty in Lednice

  • Original language description

Since 1981 the aim of the apricot breeding programme at the Horticultural Faculty in Lednice has been to obtain new adaptable cultivars, which combine most of the valuable biological traits. Standard breeding techniques, such as crossing by emasculationand hand pollination, self-pollination and open pollination, were employed. A total of 1,014 crossings were produced from more than 100 different parents. So far 15,000 seedlings have been obtained, of which about 10,000 have already been evaluated. Themost interesting selections were grafted and planted in trial orchards (we now have more than 500 elite genotypes). Seven of these have already been registered, and a further four promising new cultivars have been submitted for registration (Marlen, Svatava, Minaret, Palava) and several more with a high level of PPV tolerance have been selected for further investigation (for example, LE-3276 - Betinka, LE-2927, LE-2926, LE-3241).
