The pruning demands of 'Royal Glory' and 'Symphony' peach cultivars in two training systems and six different rootstocks

  • Original language description

The pruning intensity of two peach cultivars grafted on six different rootstocks and two tree shapes (modified spindles and vase-shaped crowns) was evaluated during years 2008-2011. The cultivars 'Royal Glory' and 'Symphony' were evaluated on the rootstocks GF 677, Lesiberian, Ishtara, Julior, Pumiselect, and MrS 2/5 (Prunus cerasifera x P. spinosa). As the control, 'Redhaven' grafted on vineyard peach seedling rootstock was chosen. For the intensity of pruning treatment, five trees from each combination were evaluated for time to prune and the results were expressed cumulatively in the seconds. After a statistical evaluation, various combinations were selected with different pruning time consumption. The rootstock Pumiselect was the weakest with the most preliminary decline. The very good canopy structure for both spindle and vase-shaped crowns was achieved in the combination with the rootstock Ishtara.
