Analysis of some phenological, pomological and qualitative traits of different cultivars of peach germplasm

  • Original language description

Selected peach cultivars maintained in the national gene pool collection at Mendel University, Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice was evaluated in this study. The orchard was established in 2010 and the trees were trained to the open vase system. Peach almond hybrid 'GF 677' was used as a rootstock peach. The aim of the experiment was to compare older, traditional peach cultivars widespread in commercial cultivation with modern type cultivars, determine the basic quality parameters of fruits and identify promising cultivars for the renewal of the cultivar range. Thirty five cultivars of traditional and modern character were evaluated. 'Redhaven' was choosen as a control cultivar. Phenological observation, pomological analyses and basic fruit composition, like soluble solid content and titratable acidity, was described. As for beginning of flowering, 'Dostojnyj', 'Lakomyj', 'Narjadnyj Nikitskij', 'Nerine', 'Otličnik', 'Romea', 'Sonet' and 'Strelec' had the latest start of flowering, i.e. 4 days after the control cultivar. As for beginning of ripening 'Suncrest' and 'Benedicte' had the latest beginning of ripening which was 15 days after 'Redhaven'. The highest levels of attractiveness were achieved by 'Benedicte', 'Helene', 'Royal Glory', 'Royal Majestic' and 'Sonet'. The highest scores of the fruit taste were achieved by 'Benedicte', 'Dostojnyj', 'Helene', 'Krasava', 'Lakomyj', 'Otličnik', 'Royal Glory', 'Royal Majestic', 'Sonet', 'Strelec' and 'Suncrest'. The values of soluble solid content ranged from 8.33 oRf ('Fénix') to 15.67 oRf ('Benedicte'). The high values of flesh firmness (above 4 kg cm-2) were measured for cultivars 'Suncrest', 'Benedicte', 'Fidelia', 'White' and 'Royal Glory'. The current adverse situation in our country can be improved by new prospective cultivars suitable for commercial growing providing new characteristics for both the producers and consumers.
