From Flap Technique to Structure from Motion: A Case Study of a Historical Park Restoration
Original language description
Visualisations of the existing and proposed states are an integral part of any landscape architecture project. There is a well-known technique of overlaying the before and after views called "flap". It was popularized by Humphry Repton in his Red Books; it uses a system of overlays to show the 'before' and 'after' views. For the model object that is the subject of this article we found flap visualisations from the end of the 18th century. On top of the historical documents, which represent a valuable source of information for reconstructing a designed landscape, we added two-time layers that show the state of the object before and after the restoration. To do so, we applied the contemporary Structure from Motion method using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The paper presents a case study that uses SfM techniques from the initial analysis, design visualisation, to post-implementation documentation and monitoring.
