THE ROLE OF AUXIN AND CYTOKININS IN PEA AXILLARY BUD GROWTH AFTER BREAKING OF APICAL DOMINANCE

  • Original language description

In buds from the 2nd primary scales of decapitated pea plants the increase of the IAA level already 2 hrs and increase of cytokinin (CK) levels 6 hrs after decapitation was recorded. It is well known that auxin is the main factor of cell expansion and cytokinins are activators of cell division. The beginning of bud growth was recorded 2 hrs after their release from apical dominance, and was accompanied with cell elongation, whereas cell division begins after 6 hrs and reaches the maximum after about 18hrs (Devitt, Stafstrom, 1995). Generally, the roots are considered the source of cytokinins, but it has been speculated that the CKs could be synthesised also in the buds. Therefore, isolated pea buds cultivated on MS medium without growth regulators were used. Similarly as in decapitated plants, transient IAA peak at 2 hrs and then an increase of cytokinins in buds was observed. Thereby, de novo biosynthesis of cytokinins in the isolated buds was proven.
