Study of the leptin gene expression in sows
Original language description
Leptin is a 16kDa protein hormone with important effects in regulating body weight, metabolism and reproductive function. The protein is by the obese (ob) gene encoded. This gene consists of 3 exons and 2 introns in human and rodents. Leptin regulates weight gain by acting on its receptors (Ob-R), these are highly expressed in areas of the hypothalamus known to be important in regulating body weight. Leptin also appears to be a significant regulator of reproductive function. The porcine leptin gene maybe a candidate gene for backfat thickness, feed intake, growth rate and reproduction. The aim of our study is to establish methods of leptine mRNA isolation and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
