Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 in dairy cattle in the Czech Republic
Original language description
Faecal samples were taken from 715 animals in six dairy cattle herds in the period between January 1997 and October 1999. Samples were examined for E. coli O157 by enrichment in EC broth with novobiocin followed by immunomagnetic separation and culture of concentrated beads onto cefixime tellurite sorbitol McConkey agar. Sorbitol-non-fermenting E.coli O157 isolates were subjected to multiplex PCR analysis for stx1, stx2, hlyA and eae A genes. The overall prevalence of STEC O157 within the set under study was 8.9% (64/715) positive animals in five herds. The distribution of the carriers over the age of dairy cattle was obvious. In the category of calves, heifers and cows respectively 13.0 % (16/123), 21.0% (28/133) and 4.4% (20/459) animals were found positive. All the E.coli O157 strains were stx2, eaeA and hlyA positive. Further characterisation of the STEC O157 strains is under way.
