  • Original language description

Investigation of swine influenza, its epidemiology, pathogenesis as well as biology of the virus has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. In the poriod of late 50´s and 60´s, numerous strains of classical swine influenza virus subtype A (H1N1) were isolated from various herds in the country. Later, from 1968, field and pathogenetic studies confirmed the relationships and possibility of human - swine virus transmission. The systematic studies on swine influenza were later discontinued. Rather accidentally, an influenza virus strain A/sw/H1Nx was isolated from a piglet suffering from bronchopneumonia in 1992. Our influenza studies were resumed in 1995. For a long time, no classical swine influenza virus could be recovered from pigs, nor could any specific antibodies be detected. There was no clinical evidence of influenza infection in pig populations. It was found, however, that pig sera contained antibodies against the influenza virus A/Praha 625/95 (H3N2) isolated during human infl
