    The European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) is one of the most important small game animals in the Czech Republic. Recently, there has been a growing interest in checking the health state of hares in hunting grounds because it is a susceptible bioindicatorreflecting the action of negative environmental factors. Infectious and parasitic diseases, no doubt, are important biotic factors influencing the population of hares. In 2003, 2004 and 2005, a total of 1051 blood sera were collected from hares during autumn hunting events and examined for selected zoonoses such as tularaemia, brucellosis and leptospirosis. Antibodies against these infections were found in 6.5, 1.6 and 7.5% of examined sera, respectively. There were significant differences in tularaemia in relation to the sex of animals and in all three diseases in relation to the age.
