Nutritional myodegeneration in adult horses.

Objectives: Description of clinical course and outcome of nutritional myodegeneration (NMD) in three adult horses. Materials and Methods: Case histories Case 1 (three years old warmblood gelding) and case 2 (seventeen years old shetland pony mare) were transported to new stables. Inability to swallow feed and water was observed in both horses two days after the transport. Horses were examined and treated (flunixin meglumin 1,1 mg/kg IV, hydration in case 2) by private veterinarians. Case 2 had a right side head oedema and tongue protrusion. Since the clinical status did not improve, horses were referred to the clinic fourth day after the onset of clinical signs. Case 3: Five years old haflinger mare with a history of one day lasting difficulties with chewing was examined by private veterinarian. Blood biochemistry revealed elevation of muscle enzymes. Sodium selenite (0,046 mg/kg) and ?-tocopherol acetate (0,52 mg/kg) were applied and the mare was referred to the clinic. Clinical cours

Abstrakt popisuje tři případy dospělých koní s dysfágii způsobenou nutriční myodegenerací. Nutriční myodegenerace je časté onemocnění hříbat způsobené nedostatkem selenu v krmné dávce. Abstrakt popisuje anamnézy a klinický průběh onemocnění u postiženýchkoní. Výskyt nutriční myodegenarece u dospělých koní je velmi vzácný.
