Bilateral enucleation is a rare surgical procedure performed in the horse, mainly for the reason that can be an intimidating prospect for many horse owners and some may instead consider euthanasia. This report describes the clinical presentation, surgical procedure, the short and long-term outcome of a bilateral enucleation in a 14-year-old appaloosa mare. The mare had a 9-year history of bilateral Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU). Bilateral phthisis bulbi with complete loss of vision was observed. Bilateral enucleation was decided and performed after the examination. This report describes a long-term painful eye case solved with bilateral enucleation improving by this way the quality of life of the horse after the operation, documents the owner´s satisfaction with the procedure and provides an opportunity to describe a treatment that prioritizes equine welfare, safety, and comfort.
