Clinical experience with guttural pouch mycosis in the Czech Republic
Original language description
The study includes fifteen cases admitted to the Equine Clinic, University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno and diagnosed with guttural pouch mycosis (GPM) between the years 1999 - 2009. These patients represent 0,123% out of all our equinepatients during this time. One stallion, seven mares and seven geldings were presented. In eight patients the left GP was affected, five horses had GPM on the right side. Both GPs were affected in only two horses. The most common clinical signs were epistaxis (9/15) and dysphagia (5/15). Conservative therapy only was applied in three horses, six horses underwent only surgical treatment and five horses were treated both conservatively and surgically. Eight horses (53%) survived and have not shown any signs of GPM exacerbation until now. Five horses were euthanised due to progressive deterioration of their clinical state and one due to acute laminitis. One mare bled to death four weeks after discharge from the hospital.
