The plasma concentrations of beta-carotene in diary cows during the periparturient period
Original language description
In 12 Holstein cows, the dynamics of plasma beta-carotene concentrations was monitored from the dry period to peak lactation. In the preparturient period, beta-carotene levels ranged from 6,61+/-1,33 to 7,73+/-1.07 umol/l, on the calving day and first few days postpartum they dropped significantly and were within the range from 4,73+/-0,71 to 4,38+/-0,56 umol/l. Beta carotene was administrated to the heifers parenterally, approximately 2 weeks before the insemination service, and had a positive effect on conception rate.
