Purpose of study: The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the aetiology, clinical signs, treatment, complications and prognosis of primary oesophageal obstruction in horses. Methods: Primary oesophageal obstruction cases were selected and subsequently analysed from the medical records of all horses admitted to the Equine Clinic Brno between the years 2004-2009. Secondary oesophageal obstructions were excluded. Results: Twenty two cases of simple oesophageal obstruction in 21 horses met the inclusion criteria. The most common presenting clinical sign was bilateral nasal discharge of saliva or food (19; 86.4%). Seventeen obstructions were caused by chewed hay or pellets (77.3%), two by wood shavings (9.1%) and in three cases the cause remainedobscure. All horses were treated medically.
