Alfaxalone anaesthesia in lizards
Original language description
Alfaxalone at a dose rate of 5 mg/kg was administered to 300 lizards via the ventral caudal vein. The induction time was 40.20 - 22.30 seconds. Tracheal tube insertion time was 69.10 ?30.03 seconds. A surgical plane of anaesthesia was achieved after twominutes and lasted for 7 minutes. Full activity was restored 15.10 ? 5.10 minutes after the initial alfaxalone injection. In a group of thirteen adult male green iguanas (Iguana iguana) the respiratory rate, oxygen saturation of haemoglobin (SpO2) and end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration (ETCO2) were measured. The respiratory rate increased significantly (p{0.01) by 4 to 7 breaths per minute. A gradual decrease of ETCO2 from 43.65 - 10.54 to 26.58 ? 8.10 mmHg (p{0.01) was noted, SpO2 did not change significantly. Intravenous use of alfaxalone proved to be a suitable and safe form of induction anaesthesia in lizards.
