Faecal shedding of ESBL-producing Escherichia coli in pigs on large scale farm after voluntary withdrawal of ceftiofur
Original language description
The aim of the present study was to review an occurrence of ESBL-producing E. coli in pig flow on large scale farm after voluntary withdrawal of ceftiofur. In two site pig production system with sow herd size of 1300 head a total of 193 rectal swabs fromdifferent age categories of pigs (sows, suckling piglets, growers, finisher pigs) and 5 environmental samples (dust) were collected in a period of few weeks. In total 10 %, 60 %, 68 % and 54 % samples from sows, suckling piglets, growers and finisher pigs, respectively, shed ESBL-producing E. coli. These results show a clear persistence of ESBL-producing E. coli across pig production system. Intestinal colonization of milking sows and survivability of ESBL-producing E. coli in farm environment may be indicated as important risk factors of their long time persistence.
