Influence of butorphanol or fentanyl on intraocular pressure in dogs: a preliminary clinical study

  • Original language description

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of two different analgesics on intraocular pressure in dogs. Methods: This was a prospective, randomized, double "blinded" clinical study. Twenty client-owned healthy dogs, body weight 12.9 ? 11.3 kg (mean ? SD) and age 8.3 ? 2.8 years, 10 males and 10 females of different breeds with no ocular abnormalities scheduled for periodontal treatment were randomly allocated into two groups receiving either butorphanol 0.2 mg/kg intravenously (group BUT) or fentanyl 0.01 mg/kg intravenously (group FEN). Intraocular pressure (IOP; TonoPen XL), pupil size (PUP; pupil gauge), heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (fR) and systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressures (SAP, DAP; Cardel 9401, Midmark) were measured prior to (baseline) and at 5 and 10 minutes after drug administration (T5, T10). Data were analyzed by Shapiro Wilk, ANOVA and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: In the FEN group a significant increase of IOP was observed at T5 (P = 0,0328) and T10 (P = 0,0488). A significant decrease of PUP at T5 and T10 was detected in both, the BUT and FEN groups (P < 0.05). In the FEN group HR dropped significantly at T10 (P = 0,0388), fR increased at T5 (P = 0,0340). In the BUT group SAP decreased at T5 and DAP at T5 and T10 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Within 10 minutes after administration fentanyl significantly increased intraocular pressure and decreased pupil size, butorphanol significantly decreased pupil size only. Support: Institutional founds of UVPS Brno and IGA 109/2017/FVL.
