The article is a reaction to one of the most serious ecological catastrophes which took place in Romania in 2000 and was caused by escape of cyanide-containing sludge from a sedimentation basin of a gold mine. Further significant emergencies due to waterpollution by cyanides are mentioned. Basic data on sources of cyanides penetrating into the aquatic environment, their toxicity for fish and mechanism of toxic action, symptomatology, diagnostics, and biological degradation of cyanides in the aquatic environment is summarised
