Effects of co-exposure of Japanese quails to cyanobacterial biomass, lead and immunological challenge

  • Original language description

Mortality of wild aquatic birds has recently been attributed to cyanobacterial toxins. However, four groups of male Japanese quails daily ingesting 10 ml of Microcystis biomass containing 0.045, 0.459, 4.605 or 46.044 ?g of microcystins, respectively, i.e. environmentally relevant doses for 10 and 30 days showed no mortality in our previous study. Wild birds may be exposed to the action of not only cyanotoxins in the aquatic environment. Other factors such as heavy metals and pathogenic micro-organismsmay also participate in their mortality. The aim of our next study was, therefore, evaluation of effects of co-exposures of Japanese quails to cyanobacterial biomass, lead and antigenic challenge. Experimental birds were divided into groups of five individuals and exposed to cyanobacterial biomass, lead and antigenic load to test immune functions for 30 days. A total of 8 groups of birds with all possible combinations of the above factors and controls were employed in the study. Lead sho
