A Japanese quail model of single and combined exposures to cyanotoxins, lead and Newcastle virus

  • Original language description

While there are reports on avian wildlife mortalities attributed to cyanotoxins, our recent experimental studies showed no mortality in Japanese quails despite significant biochemical, histopathological and subcellular signs of hepatic damage and induction of oxidative stress along with accumulation of microcystins. The present study, therefore, tested the hypothesis that under natural conditions co-exposure to multiple stressors may enhance avian mortality. Japanese quails were exposed to single and combined action of cyanotoxins, lead and live Newcastle vaccination strain. While no deaths were in groups of single exposures, there was 40% mortality in the group of experimental birds receiving both cyanobacterial biomass and lead. There was considerable accumulation of microcystins in the liver tissue of all cyanobacterial biomass exposed birds. There was a drop in haematocrit and haemoglobin concentrations in all lead exposed groups. Both single and combined exposures to cyanobacteria
