Wildlife toxicity cases due to the use of anticoagulation rodenticides have frequently been reported. There are, however, no reference values concerning blood clotting in non-target game animals. It was our aim to obtain normal values of blood coagulation times in healthy European brown hares (Lepus europaeus) and compare them with values found in hares from a population that might have been exposed to bromadiolone as evidence of this exposure confirmed by subsequent toxicological analysis. Blood samples from a total of 30 healthy hares and 10 hares from hunting grounds affected by rodent control were taken. Hares were physically restrained for blood collection from vena cephalica. Normal coagulation parameters (thrombin time, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen concentration, and platelet count) of healthy European brown hares ranges are 13.97?1.37 sec, 13.32?2.15 sec, 16.73?1.86 sec, 2.98?1.06 g/L and 355.28?128.73 x109/L, respectively.
