Original language description
The study aimed at evaluating ambient temperature as a factor influencing transport-related mortality rates of hens and cockerels. In cooperation with state veterinary inspectors we recorded the mortality rates of hens and cockerels in connection with transport to slaughterhouses in the Czech Republic in the period from 1997 to 2008. Average monthly ambient temperatures at 7 a.m. in locations typical for road transportation of animals in the monitored period were obtained from the Czech Meteorological Institute. Seasonality shown here month by month influenced the number of hens and cockerels dying during transport. The highest mortality rates were found during the coldest months of the year (January and February) when the average monthly ambient temperature at 7 a.m. was -2.2 °C and -1 °C, respectively. When comparing seasons, winter transport was connected with the highest mortality of hens and cockerels (1.26%), statistically significantly lower mortality rates were found in spring
