The Level of Hen and Cockerel Protection in Transport for Slaughter in the Czech Republic.
Original language description
The transport-related mortality of hens and cockerels being sent to poultry processing plants was monitored in the Czech Republic from 1997 to 2008. Out of 58,731,807 hens and cockerels transported for slaughter in the monitored period, 560,648 (0.95%) birds died. Transport-related mortality in hens and cockerels is not only markedly higher than that of other monitored poultry species and categories but it is also higher than mortality rates reported for other species of farm animals transported for slaughter in the Czech Republic. One particularly alarming fact is that the transport-related mortality of hens and cockerels continued to increase during the monitored period. It varied from 0.58% to 0.89% in the period from 1997 to 2002, whereas from 2003to 2008 it varied from 0.84% to 1.99%, the difference being statistically significant (P < 0.01). It can be assumed that present transport conditions do not ensure the welfare of hens and cockerels at a sufficient level. The study discus
