Pollen types collection focused on melissopalynology
Original language description
The pollen atlas, which you are holding in your hands or looking at in electronic format, is intended for melissopalynological analysis of honey obtained by filtering honey on cellulose filters with subsequent clarification with resin. This method of processing brings a number of advantages in terms of quantifiable honey processing, but it also brings morphological changes caused by pollen dehydration. The resulting changes are not uniform for all botanical taxa and their description is not easy. The atlas therefore provides photo documentation of botanical taxa represented in the Czech Republic, which are processed by the pollen filtration technique. Images from light microscopy are supplemented by electron microscopy images for a more detailed description of pollen surface structures. Information on pollen taxa is further supplemented by morphological characterization of pollen grains, which includes, in addition to commonly used length and width descriptions, also a number of other morphological characteristics that have their application in automated pollen grain identification systems. The morphological characteristics are supplemented by the colour characteristics of the pollen grains, which are scanned in two ways, using a CCD chip and a spectrophotometer showing the entire spectral record. Information on taxa is also supplemented by their worldwide distribution. Although in all cases, the pollen collection was acquired in the Czech Republic, some taxa are not typical for the Czech Republic and do not occur here in general, or their occurrence has not yet been described in our territory.
